Melbourne Aquarium

The Melbourne Aquarium is a great place to go.

It’s one of those things to do in Melbourne with the kids, that you will still enjoy as an adult as well.

We go fairly regularly, at least once a year.

It’s a lot of fun and it is great to see your kids going through and exploring different things everytime you go there.

Our son was very scared of the big shark last time we went, but this time he just stood in front of the glass and shouted in full amazement:”Wow! That’s a big fishy.”

What’s On In Melbourne Aquarium

The Melbourne Aquarium was designed to look like a moored ship. The majority of the building lies 20 meters below the surface! You can enjoy your very own self-guided tour that will take you through four unique levels.

  • Level One – Creepy caves, billabong, rock pools, and mangroves

  • Ground Floor – Sink or swim with giant crabs and sea dragons, coral atoll, sea jellies, Japanese spider crab

  • Level B-1 – Octopus and children’s play area

  • Level B-2 – Shark conservation, animal nursery, oceanarium, fish bowl

Into aquatic wildlife such as sharks, stingrays, and sea turtles then you will have to visit the 2.2 million liter ocean aquarium. This huge aquarium has a walk under glass room that will make you feel as if you are swimming with the fish.
In for an adventure? If you are brave enough you can suit up and dive in with the shark at Melbourne Aquarium. Alternatively, you may just want to take a tour in the glass bottom boat so you can see the marina life and stay dry. However, no matter what, the feeding of the sharks is an interesting sight. The professional divers at Melbourne aquarium feed the sharks twice a day for the public to see.

You Can Look… And Touch

If you are like my kids, then looking is great, but touching is better. There is a rock pool where aquarium staff will let you handle things like starfish and sea urchins.
Do you have a child that has a birthday coming up? Melbourne aquarium has something for that too. They will allow you to have a birthday party at the aquarium and provide your child’s favourite food and other cool options.

Come Meet The Penguins

The Melbourne Aquarium also does a number of themed exhibitions. They recently did “Creepy Crawlies”. Now “Antartica” is on. This is a simulation of the coldest place on earth, featuring real ice and snow. You can watch the King and Gentoo penguin slide and play on the ice, or take an expedition through Antarctica! The project was a year in construction and opened late in 2008. This is the only place in Australia with these pinguins.

While taking in all the sites of the aquarium you will work up an appetite.

This is no problem all you have to do is visit the Melbourne aquarium cafe.

They have everything from a full lunch to cup of coffee.

You can enjoy your meal while taking in the sights of the Yarra river and Southbank at the other side of the water.

Melbourne Aquarium, a fun time in Melbourne with the kids!
