The last Saturday in September is Grand Final Day. A big event in Melbourne that has drawn over 100,000 visitors to the Melbourne Cricket Ground in recent years, making the AFL Grand Final the best visited domestic club championship event in the world.

Melbourne Spring Carnival The Melbourne spring carnival is held in October and November, fall months to most of us, however in Melbourne it is spring. The spring carnival is held between the football and the cricket season. This is done for a reason. Most people do not want to give up their footy and their cricket, but it also fits nicely into the time of year. After the colder and a bit wetter winter, spring often offers plenty of beautiful days. Ideal for a day of fun and frivolity at the races! The fashion industry realizes sales in excess of 20 million dollars so its hard to say if the main attraction is watching the horses or people watching.

History of the Melbourne Cup
The history of the Melbourne cup goes back all the way to 1861. When it comes to horse racing, Australia has a tradition that goes back a hundred years and continues to this very day. The Melbourne Cup is known as the race that stops a nation, and it is very close to true! Every year, Australia’s major annual thoroughbred horse race brings vast crowds of spectators to the Flemington Racecourse and millions watch from home.

The Melbourne Cup Festival is a premiere sporting event and is also the world’s largest outdoor fashion event. It was created in 1861 to rival the Victoria Jockey Club, but the festival took off to be the biggest racing event that attracts the best horses from all over the world.

Melbourne Boxing Day Test
The Melbourne Boxing Day Test is one of those events that belong to Melbourne like the Melbourne Cup or the AFL Grand Final. For those who are unaware, Boxing Day is December 26th. As it is a holiday there are not many sporting events going on around the world on Boxing Day. In Australia we celebrate a day off in the blazing hot summer with a cricket test match between the Australian Cricket Team and another national team.

Australian Open Tennis The Australian Open Tennis tournament is one of four Grand Slam tennis tournaments in the world. The Australian Open is held in Melbourne every year in the middle of summer. It is held at the great Melbourne Park.

Moonah Classic Golf
The Moonah Classic is a golf tournament held at Moonah Links, one of Australia’s most famous golf grounds. Some of the activities and festivities around this major golf event are still unknown. However, what we do know is that the Open Course at Moonah Links is expected to be packed with visitors and golfers from around the world in February.

Formula 1 Australia
The Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix is world-class entertainment. It is the premier racing event in Australia. Aside from the excitement on and around the Grand Prix circuit, there is plenty more to do. You can enjoy the carnival atmosphere at the fair that is held along with the F1 racing event.

Australian Rules Football
In Australia, but predominantly in Melbourne and Victoria, the main sport is Australian Rules Football. March marks the start of the season which runs uptil the last Saturday of September. On that day the AFL Grand Final is held.

Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG)
Travel into inner Melbourne and you might be directed to the Australian version of the “8th Wonder of the World”, the Melbourne Cricket Ground or MCG. We usually refer to it as “The G”. This open-air stadium is the 8th largest stadium in the world. It is also home to the worlds most famous cricket games and the infamous AFL Grand Final which fills the stadium to its capacity each year in late September. Referred to as “The G Spot” by Madonna during her Girlie Show Tour in 1993, the MCG has hosted not only memorable music performances but is the primary platform for some of Australias most famous sporting events. It is truly the “Spiritual Home of Australian Sport”.

Rod Laver Arena
Rod Laver is considered amongst many experts to be one of the top tennis players the world has ever seen. In an era dominated by swashbuckling Australians such as John Newcombe and Ken Roswall, the ruthlessness of Laver made him the first truly modern player. Leading the way with earnings from sponsorships he was the first tennis millionaire, his achievements made even more amazing when you think of the fact he didnt play in the majors a large portion of his career, and when he did he reached six consecutive finals. Because he is such an iconic Australian sportsman he got a stadium named after him.

Telstra Dome (now called Etihad Stadium)
You might recall seeing the Telstra Dome setting the stage for Nicholas Cages daring helicopter jump in the film “Ghost Rider” in 2007. Or perhaps you were one of the screaming fans present during Robbie Williams Close Encounters Tour, which had a record attendance of over 66,000 people in 2006. Whatever the occasion, the Telstra Dome serves as a multipurpose sports and entertainment stadium in the Docklands precinct of Melbourne, Australia.

The Melbourne Tigers are one of the best national basketball teams in Australia. So, when you are in Melbourne and want to see some great Melbourne basketball, go grab your Tigers gear. It’s game day! It’s time to kick back, have some dogs and beer and yell yourself silly as you rout, rout, rout for the home team!
